MARY MCCARTNEY (born London, 1969) is a British Photographer best known for discovering rare moments of unguarded, emotionally charged intimacy that offers us new insight to her subjects. Mary’s work has concentrated on the world of portrait photography and is suffused with a deep personal investment that captures the creative chemistry between her and her subjects. Mary responds to her wide variety of subjects as spontaneously as they are studied, thanks to her distinctive style and talent for encapsulating the inspirations, vulnerability, histories and personalities of her subjects. Mary is also an ambassador for sustainable, meat-free living and a co-founder of Meat Free Monday, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Mary is also a global ambassador for Green Common/Green Monday, Asia’s leading plant based food entrepreneurs.

McCartney’s exhibitions and publications include “Off Pointe”: an in-depth photographic study of the Royal Ballet after hours, with a selection of works are available to view as part of the permanent collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2018). This body of work was first shown at The Royal Opera House, London (2004). ‘Off Pointe’ was also proudly presented by The Royal Photographic Society at Photo London (2019) Pavilion Commission at Somerset House.

“British Style Observed,” at the National History Museum, London (2008); and “From Where I Stand,” at the National Portrait Gallery and Michael Hoppen Gallery, London (2010). The two-volume book “Monochrome Colour” was published by GOST in (2014), with a concurrent exhibition at 3 Grafton Street, London, curated by de Pury de Pury.

In (2015) Mary’s “Mother Daughter” exhibition was first shown at the Gagosian Gallery in NYC, later the same year Mary was chosen to take the official photograph of Her Majesty the Queen to mark the occasion of her becoming the longest reigning Monarch in history (2015).

Continuing her study of the unseen, Mary captures a behind the scenes study of Mark Rylance as Olivia in the play Twelfth Night and his ensemble cast pre, during and post-performance. The books title: “Twelfth Night 15.12.13” published (2016) was quoted by Mark “The study is a rare peep backstage that Mary has captured so spontaneously”.

(2018) saw the publication of ’The White Horse’ with Rizzoli International USA. A collection of intimate pictures that convey the profound connection that binds people to these majestic animals. ‘The White Horse’ exhibition premiered at the esteemed Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco (2018) and since (2019) a selection of works have been acquired as part of the HERMES collection of contemporary photography.

Mary guest edited National Geographic magazine in October (2018), to promote vegetarianism as part of sustainable plant based living in response to the ongoing ecological crisis. 

“Open Source” at the Hauser and Wirth Gallery, Somerset (2108) where Mary curated a seasonal menu for her dinner guests, in front of a live audience, which utilised the local kitchen garden to exemplify her belief in satisfying, sustainable plant based eating for all. 

Mary’s latest body of work is titled ‘Paris Nude’ a collection of never-before-seen nude photographs and the first full series of nudes in Mary’s distinguished career. “Paris Nude” was Published by HENI (2019).

September (2019) saw a collective of works hung at The Wola Museum in Warsaw, Poland as part of the Warsaw Gallery Weekend. The show features never before exhibited works from the archive entitled “Monochrome Colour” including 4 works captured on her most recent collabration with Vogue Poland a cover story for their November issue.

Mary is currently developing a TV series to reflect her love of cooking, to entice a wider audience towards a sustainable diet. She has developed 4 to camera pieces for the Food Network’s Kitchen App -launched October (2019).
